To me, sketches are what the bar practice is to a ballerina—the steady foundation upon which everything can be built. Those oil pastel pieces have been done in 20 minutes or less, yet they took years of practice to reach their shapes. Sketching has helped me to grow and expand my skills, my vision and my understanding of the world. Sometimes the most beautiful lines and surprises emerge from the practice; I see them as moments of grace.
